The World of Emma Educator
The Magical World of Books

Not only can children benefit from my suggested books but adults can too.   Here are some books about education and other topics from which both parents and adults might gain insight:   Below there are children's books as well.   Enjoy!

The Unprocessed Child: Living Without School Child's Work Real Lives
The Unprocessed Child: Living Without School by Valerie Fitzenreiter A personal story/account of how she raised her daughter without 'school'. Insightful. Child's Work by Nancy Wallace is a must read for any educator, be it parent, guardian, or teacher. The level of trust in childrens' learning processes is really what this book is about and it does a thorough job conveying this. Real Lives by Grace Llewellyn is an awesome collection of eleven teenagers' stories whose lives are filled with exploration and learning without formal schooling. Again, another must read for any parent, guardian, or teacher.
The Legacy of Luna Timber Wars Earth First! journals by the Earth First! collective
The Legacy of Luna by Julia Butterfly Hill is about her story of sitting in Luna (an approximate 300 ft. redwood tree) for over 2 years. However, it is so much more than just the physical sitting in a tree. It is about the political struggle of saving our ecosystem and the costs emotionally, physically, and spiritually for our planet and its peoples. Timber Wars by Judi Bari. She has since died from cancer but her struggle of saving the redwoods in Northern California is a testimony of what someone can do to bring awareness to those in political power as well as everyone else. The devasting - near death experience of a political activist! An intense book - very powerful and eye opening. The world of corruption by politics really sucks, specifically when you butt up against it! Earth First! journals by the Earth First! collective. The most informative and radical publication about direct action for planet earth. Please give yourself a gift--read this journal!
The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss Stargirl
The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter. A must read for every teacher and upper grade student. Want to get to the heart of nature, emotions, politics, relationships? Read this book! Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss is a must read for every teacher. You don't think punctuation is important? You will after this book! It's very funny and an easy read to boot! Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli This book is about love, honesty, and acceptance. A definite must read particularly for teenagers.
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
You cannot have had a good childhood if you haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (well, maybe you could). Start with The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, then continue onto The Magician's Nephew. I promise your students will thrive as readers with the entire series. (Though, The Last Battle was a bit weird and dull near the middle/end.)
Think Fair Trade First!
